History Of The Flats

On the 5th October 1967 Rt.Hon.The Lord Mayor, Alderman the Rev.F.C Vyvyan-Jones officially opened Carolina House.

The Lord Mayor of Bristol said today he was happy to think people were coming back to live in the heart of the city instead of on its out-skirts.

Ald.The Rev F.C. Vyvyan-Jones was officially opening Carolina House one of the three main multi storey blocks of flats in the Kingsdown re-development scheme.

Carolina House would stand out as an example to the rest of the country of the work Bristol was doing in establishing homes in the heart of the city.

It was a splendid achievement in Bristols housing programme and greatly enhanced the amenities of this historic area.

The Lord Mayor added that Carolina House was very nearly in his parish and he hoped personally that his own parish would follow Kingsdown in this home transfusion

At the opening ceremony in the theatre of neighbouring Bristol Arts Centre. Ald Geoffrey Palmer Chairman of the housing committee said this was one of the most interesting developments in the country. He was sure other local authorities would be visiting Bristol to view it.

Ald.Palmer said officially the site had been ear marked for four-storey flats. But the housing committee were against it having four storey buildings without lifts especially on a steeply sloping site.

The new flats were among the most modern in Europe-and the only place he knew where you could take a lift to the local

After the official speeches the Lord Mayor unveiled a plaque and then inspected Carolina House.
