Dove Street Action Group

Welcome to the home of the Dove Street Action Group, created in 1998 to represent the residents of the Dove Street estate, in the Kingsdown area of Bristol.

Our aims are to improve the quality of life for all the residents, by liaising with the housing services, the caretakers and the neighbourhood watch scheme to improve environmental and social conditions within the blocks.

We rely on you, the residents, to let us know what you want, to suggest improvements, and to draw attention to any problems the residents may be experiencing.

Dove Street Community Arts Festival - 9th -11th September 2005

This year saw the Dove Street Community Arts Festival. Centred around the Snail Gallery near King Square in Dove Street South. Co-inciding with the Dove Street street party, this was our biggest most exciting event yet.

The Snail Gallery hosted the opening event with a premiere performance of a specially commisioned musical composition 'We Are Almost Reaching The Clouds' by Frederic Maintenant, together with a specially commissioned video installation by Rik Lander. On show was poetry, storytelling artwork and lots more.

The first annual Dove Street Community Arts Festival was a great success and marked a major step forward for the Dove Street Action Group.

We were proud of the quality of artworks and performances, which were provided predominantly by local residents. In particular there were more and better performances from local children, who had benefited from tuition at theatre, circus skills and art workshops run over the preceding months. Appalling weather prevented some workshops at the street party from taking place but barely dampened the spirits of up to couple of hundred participants.

We were delighted at the greater involvement of the Somali community in organising and attending events. The juxtaposition of live Somali music and torrential rain on the Saturday afternoon provided a memorable scene both multicultural and quintessentially English.

We were also pleased to welcome assistance from the Kingsdown Council Tenants' Association and members of the Elim Church, and were grateful for the generous gift of a robust and weatherproof temporary stage from Kennet Construction, who have been undertaking renovation works on the Dove Street flats. For the first time we integrated part of our programme with that of the Cube Cinema (also on Dove Street).

The Snail Gallery

The Snail Gallery itself is an example of our aims, originally a run down and little used access ramp for the vast labyrinth of underground carparking here, it is gradually transforming into a community art gallery and useful space for events such as table top sales and childrens' parties.

The Snail is in a state of continual transformation.

Originally it had a bit of underground post-industrial chic, with distressed concrete and grimy walls, it took on a patchwork post modern stage with a very beautiful and strange mural, and currently it is a very vibrant deep lilac colour!

The Venn festival saw the Snail's best attendance yet when Tom Bugs performed a piece of underground electronic experimental music to a packed and fascinated audience.
